Hamburger Steaks with Mushroom Gravy

This is a recipe that reminds me of my childhood. Seasoned hamburger is formed into patties and then a mushroom and onion gravy is made in the pan to smother the patties. This dish would be perfect served along with mashed potatoes. The brown gravy is rich and flavorful, you would never imagine it was Whole30 and paleo compatible.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 T avocado oil
  • 8oz sliced baby bella mushrooms
  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 T cassava flour
  • 1 1/2 C beef broth
  • 1 T coconut aminos
  • 2 tsp fresh thyme
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl mix the ground beef, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper.
  2. Once the beef is mixed thoroughly, divide it into 4 portions and form 1/4-inch-thick patties.
  3. Add the avocado oil to a large skillet on medium heat. Once the pan is hot, cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the pan once they are cooked through and set them aside.
  4. Add the onions, garlic, and mushrooms to the pan and cook until they are tender about 5-7 minutes. Be sure to stir occasionally to prevent them from burning.
  5. Sprinkle the flour in the pan and stir to coat the vegetables. Whisk in the beef broth. Add the thyme, coconut aminos, and 1/2 tsp sea salt. Let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes, whisking frequently.
  6. Add the patties back in and continue simmering until the beef is warm.
  7. Serve with your favorite roasted vegetable or mashed potatoes.
